GHS HAZCOM

OSHA HAZARDOUS COMMUNICATION STANDARD AND GLOBALLY HARMONIZED SYSTEM OF CLASSIFICATION AND LABELING OF CHEMICALS

The Globally Harmonized System (GHS) is a system for classification of chemical hazards and a standardized approach to label elements and safety data sheets. In March 2012, OSHA modified the Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) to adopt the GHS to improve safety and health of workers through more effective communications on chemical hazards.

GHS is a logical and comprehensive approach to:
  • Defining health, physical and environmental hazards of chemicals
  • Creating classification of processes that use available date on chemicals for comparison with the defined hazard criteria
  • Communicating hazard information, as well as protective measures, on labels and Safety Data Sheets (SDS)

GHS Phase-In Schedule:

December 1, 2013 – Train employees

- All workers exposed to hazardous chemicals including temporary and contract workers.

- Training includes new label elements, SDS format and how to use label information

June 1, 2015

Distributors have six months to ensure compliance with new provisions

December 1, 2015
